Native, Cross-Platform or Web: Choosing Before You Build

The technology stack behind an application affects development cost, maintenance effort, performance, release cycles, and future scalability. While many vendors recommend the approach they are most comfortable delivering, the right choice depends on your business goals, user expectations, and product requirements. Before recommending a development path, we help businesses evaluate whether their application requires maximum device capabilities, broad market reach, or the fastest route to launch.

  • Native Apps
  • Cross-Platform Apps
  • Progressive Web Apps (PWA)

Each approach has advantages, trade-offs, and ideal use cases. Selecting the right one early helps avoid costly redevelopment, performance limitations, and long-term maintenance challenges.

Factor Native (Swift / Kotlin) Cross-Platform (Flutter / React Native) Progressive Web App (PWA)
Codebases to Maintain Two separate codebases One shared codebase with minor platform adjustments Single web codebase
Access to Device Features Full access to latest device capabilities Broad access with occasional platform limitations Limited, especially on iOS
Performance Highest possible performance High performance for most business applications Suitable for content-driven experiences
Distribution App Store & Google Play App Store & Google Play Accessible directly via URL
Updates Requires store approval Requires store approval Instant deployment
Best For Graphics-intensive and hardware-dependent apps Most business and customer-facing applications Content, forms, booking, and transactional platforms
Scalability Excellent Excellent for most use cases Moderate
Development Cost Highest Moderate Lowest
Time to Market Longest Faster than native Fastest
Main Limitation Higher cost and duplicated development effort Platform-specific edge cases Limited offline and device capabilities

For most business applications, cross-platform development is the practical default choice. Modern frameworks such as Flutter and React Native deliver near-native experiences while reducing development and maintenance costs. Native development becomes worthwhile when the application depends heavily on device hardware, advanced graphics, real-time processing, or deep operating system integrations.

Progressive Web Apps remain one of the most overlooked options. If your primary objective is reach, accessibility, and frictionless adoption, a PWA can often deliver better business outcomes than requiring users to install an application from an app store. Where Apps Actually Fail

Most application failures aren't caused by technology choices. They happen because teams optimise for launch day instead of real-world usage. After fifteen years of building mobile and web applications, the patterns are remarkably consistent.

Data Engineering & AI Pipeline

Onboarding Friction

The signup form requesting information you don't need yet is where a meaningful share of acquisition spend dies. Every additional field is another opportunity to leave.

Data Quality Issues

Mobile clients retry requests, run in the background and hit APIs in patterns web applications never do. Backends that aren't designed for this become reliability bottlenecks.

Poor Network Experience

The app was built and demoed on office Wi-Fi. Real users are on congested mobile networks, in lifts, on trains. Offline and degraded-network behaviour is a design decision, and skipping it is also a decision.

Device Performance Gaps

Apps that run well on flagship devices can still struggle elsewhere. Older mid-range phones are the benchmark that matters.

Early Permission Requests

Requesting location, camera or notification access before the user understands the value is how permissions get denied permanently.

Backend Bottlenecks

A Pipelines built without governance, documentation, or monitoring become difficult to maintain and risky to modify over time.

Demo-Driven Design

Demos reward novelty. Retention rewards speed and predictability. Apps designed for the pitch often struggle in the tenth session.

What We Build

Applications Built Around Users, Platforms & Business Goals

Every application is a trade-off between performance, reach, cost, maintenance, and user expectations. We help businesses choose the right architecture, platform, and development approach before writing code—then build applications designed to scale, adapt, and remain maintainable long after launch.

Cross-Platform Applications

Cross-Platform Applications

Flutter and React Native, with the platform-specific work done properly rather than pretended away. A single codebase reduces duplication; it doesn't eliminate the fact that iOS and Android have different conventions and users notice when they're ignored.

What Drives the
Cost of an App

We don't publish fixed rates because no two applications are built the same way. The final investment depends on architecture, integrations, platform choices, and long-term support requirements rather than screen count alone.

Platform Strategy

Native, cross-platform, or PWA. This is often the single biggest factor affecting development effort and long-term maintenance.

Backend Requirements

Connecting to existing systems is one thing. Building new systems—or integrating with systems that lack usable APIs—is another.

Design Fidelity

A functional interface and a highly customized user experience require different levels of design, testing, and implementation effort.

Offline Capability

Offline access requires synchronization, conflict handling, and data consistency planning—not simply a feature toggle.

Third-Party Integrations

Payments, maps, authentication, analytics, and external services each add implementation, testing, and compliance requirements.

Device & OS Support

Supporting older devices and multiple OS versions significantly increases testing complexity and ongoing maintenance.

Let's Discuss What Your Business Actually Needs

Whether you need a custom platform, system integration, workflow automation, or simply expert guidance, we start with a conversation about your goals—not the technology. The right solution isn't always the most complex one, and we'll help you find it.

Flexible Engagement Models for App Development

Different applications require different delivery approaches. Whether you're building a new product, scaling an existing platform, or maintaining a live application, we offer engagement models designed to match your goals, timeline, and level of involvement.

Model Works Best When Trade-Off
Dedicated Team The product will continue evolving beyond the initial release and requires ongoing development. Requires a product owner or active stakeholder involvement from your side.
Project Based The application scope, features, and delivery requirements are clearly defined upfront. Scope changes introduce additional planning, review, and delivery adjustments.
Monthly Retainer You need continuous releases, maintenance, enhancements, and long-term product support. May be unnecessary for one-time development projects.
Hourly Best for audits, consulting, bug fixes, small enhancements, and short-term tasks. Costs can become difficult to predict for larger development initiatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our services, process, timelines, and collaboration model.

Should we build native or cross-platform? +

For most business applications, cross-platform. Flutter and React Native are mature enough that users can't reliably tell, and one codebase is materially cheaper to maintain. Native earns its cost for heavy graphics, sustained sensor or camera processing, or deep OS integration. If the reason for choosing native is that cross-platform sounds unserious, that's not a technical reason.

Do we need an app at all, or would a PWA work? +

If your app is content, forms and transactions, and your acquisition problem is that people won't install things, a PWA may serve you better. It installs from a URL, updates instantly, and skips store review. The trade-offs are real — weaker iOS capabilities, less offline depth, no store discoverability — but the question deserves asking before you commit to a store presence.

How long does app development take? +

It depends most on platform strategy and whether the backend exists. What we'd hold to regardless: you should be installing and using working builds early, not reviewing progress reports. If you can't put a build on your own phone within a reasonable stretch of starting, something is wrong with the delivery model.

Who owns the code and the app store listings? +

You do. Code, IP and store listings belong to you and are published under your developer accounts wherever possible. A vendor holding your store listing is holding your users hostage — ask about this before signing anything, with any agency.

Get More Information
What happens when Apple or Google releases a new OS version? +

Things break, on a schedule you don't control. Annual OS releases deprecate APIs and change behaviour, and apps need updating to stay functional and compliant. This is an ongoing obligation independent of new features, and any cost model that omits it is incomplete.

Can you take over an app someone else built? +

Yes, and it's common. The first step is an honest assessment of the existing codebase — sometimes taking it over is right, sometimes the technical debt makes it more expensive than starting again. We'd rather say so up front than discover it three months in on your budget.

Get More Information
How do you test that the app works for real users? +

Testing across a device matrix that includes older and lower-spec hardware, plus degraded and offline network conditions. The most common source of production surprises is that everything was validated on current flagship phones and office wifi, which describes your team's experience and almost nobody else's.
